(1) "Intro to Bocce" - This Sunday 8/15 - Palisades Park; (2) "Silver Linings and Lessons of the Last 18 Months" - 9/2 - 10:30 a.m. - via Zoom

Hi Everyone,

Hope you're doing well as we approach mid-August.  A month ago, things seemed to be picking up and hopeful; presumably most of us had been vaccinated.  Yet with the Delta variant ascendant, many are again recalibrating our way as far as what feels safe.

We wanted to let you know about a couple of upcoming programs, one in-person and the other virtual.  The first is an "Introduction to Bocce" that will be held outdoors at the Palisades Park this coming Sunday, August 15, at 3:00 p.m.   The second is an online meeting titled "Silver Linings" that will take place on Thursday, September 2 at 10:30 a.m., via Zoom. We hope you'll join us for one or both!

Here's more information:

THIS SUNDAY, AUGUST 15 - "INTRODUCTION TO BOCCE" - 3:00 PM -  PALISADES PARK

There is a Senior Bocce League that started this summer in the Palisades – and it’s been a wild success. Maybe you're already involved.  If not, read on!

The league plays at the beautiful new Veterans Gardens at Palisades Park, which has courts and a picnic area.  Eighty-six seniors (on eight teams) play every Tuesday at 11 AM and noon, and then have a picnic party after they play. There's no charge to participate, and no prior experience is needed.  You can be assigned to a team randomly, or join with a friend(s).  Players must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Jimmy Dunne, the "Commissioner of Bocce" and past Palisades Citizen of the Year, has agreed to give us an introduction to bocce this Sunday, August 15, at 3:00 p.m. at the bocce courts in the park.  We'll play and learn, and, if you like it, you can then sign up for the Autumn League that starts August 24.

You don’t need to register for Sunday's program in advance -  you can just show up.  However, it would be helpful if we could get a sense of how many will be coming, so we'd appreciate it if you could email and let us know you're planning to attend.

The new bocce courts are on the left-hand side as you drive up the Rec Center driveway from the intersection of Toyopa and Alma Real. For mapping purposes, the address of the Rec Center is 851 Alma Real Drive in Pacific Palisades.

If you can’t make it on Sunday but want to register for the league, you can do so online at http://www.palisadesbocce.com.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 2 - "SILVER LININGS AND LESSONS FROM THE LAST 18 MONTHS" - 10:30 AM - VIA ZOOM

It's not hard to identify ways our lives have been negatively impacted by the lockdown over the past year-and-a-half.  But what about the flip side?

One year ago we interviewed some of your neighbors as to their lived experience with the pandemic.  There was awareness of loss and loneliness, but there was also recognition of some unexpectedly felicitous ramifications and possibilities.

At our online program on Thursday, September 2, at 10:30 a.m., we'll ask you to reflect on how the experience has changed your life in a constructive way.  What positive things have come out of the experience for you?  What lessons can you take away?  Which changes do you expect are likely to be permanent?

The program will take place online, via the Zoom platform. (For tips on using Zoom, click here.)  There will not be a featured speaker.  Instead, we'll share our experiences and listen to one another. We will first, aided by the magic of Zoom,  divide into smaller groups, to permit more personal interactions.   Then we will be brought back together to share our small group's takeaways with the larger group.

The entire meeting will last about 45 minutes to an hour.  We hope you'll leave happy to have shared your thoughts and to have learned from and connected with your neighbors.

This is a free event, but you must register in advance.   To register, please email us. Within 24 hours, you will receive an acknowledgment of your registration. The Zoom link will be sent to you at 9:00 a.m. the morning of the meeting.

We hope to see you at one or both of these events!
